ASSIGNMENT 1- PROCESS ESSAY AND SKETCH

The definition of sketching is making a rough drawing of something. It is also known as free-hand drawing. As for its usefulness in my course, it is very useful as a lot of our assignments involve at least some form of sketching. As for this assignment, I am to write a process essay about myself sketching a kitchen utensil. What is a process essay? A process essay is an essay in which we describe how to do something or tell how something is carried out or made. The benefit of a process essay is that it is going to be helpful for the reader as they will know how to do something when they have finished reading that particular essay. They can also understand some process that puzzled them before.

Moving on to the kitchen utensil that I am going choose. After going around my kitchen a couple of times, I have finally decided that the kitchen utensil I am going to be sketching is the rice cooker. What does a rice cooker do? Well the rice cooker, as the name suggests, cooks rice. It is almost a must to own a rice cooker in every household. The reason being rice is the main diet of most people in this country. Now, the reason that I have chosen to sketch the rice cooker above any other kitchen utensil is not only because of my love for rice, it is also because I have this strange habit of wanting to sketch something a little bit more complex, which is also the reason I did not decide on sketching something simpler such as a spoon, fork or knife.

I was given the assignment to sketch a kitchen utensil and I have chosen the rice cooker. So first, I am going to talk about the tools I used to make the sketch a success. First of all, I used a combination of a 2B and a HB pencil for my initial sketch. Since the HB pencil is soft, it was very convenient for me as it is much easier to erase in the event that I make a mistake during the sketch. For the outline of the rice cooker sketch, I used a 2B pencil to make it a little bit more detailed. There are some other tools that I have used to achieve balance. One of the tools is the ruler. The ruler is used to make my sketch look neater. It is also to prevent any crooked lines on my sketch. I also used an eraser to erase any mistakes that I may have caused during the sketch. As for my workplace, I did a little bit of cleaning up. Not only does it provide me with more space to sketch, it also prevents me from getting scolded by my grandmother, who is a bit of a perfectionist and hates seeing messy spaces.

That is not the end of my sketching story. I have used a more complex way of sketching. After the basic sketch is done, I used a black Faber Castell colour pencil to further outline my sketch to give it a more realistic look. It is very important for me to have a good lighting during my sketch as it makes it easier for me to see the rice cooker so I can sketch in every little detail that I may have missed during the initial sketch. I looked around my rice cooker to see which angle is the most suitable for the sketch. There are some minor mistakes that I have caused during the sketch but they are all easily corrected with the use of my trusty eraser.

Finally, after all the process, I have completed my sketch. Not a bad sketch if I do say so myself. The sketch took me a total of about one hour from choosing my kitchen utensil to the completion of my sketch. What did I feel after finishing my sketch? Well, I surprisingly enjoyed my time sketching the rice cooker. It may be because I have spent my free time sketching ever since I was a little boy and naturally I enjoyed doing this. If I have the chance, I would happily do this sort of thing again in the future.
